Build a Bridge: The Sundial

Last month while we were spending time here and hiking here, we also made a stop at one of my favorite bridges: the Sundial Bridge in Redding, California.Completed and opened to the public in 2004, the bridge serves as a stunning centerpiece for the Turtle Bay Exploration Park and spans a wide section of the Upper Sacramento River.

The coolest aspect of the design (aside from it being a working sundial, of course) is that the bridge has no supports in the water. The bridge is not only an engineering and artistic feat, but also boasts an environmentally friendly design. Can't beat that.

To learn more about the bridge, check out the website here. And if you head there for a visit, be sure to allow enough time to see the rest of the Turtle Bay Exploration Park. There's an arboretum, a museum, miles of bike and walking trails and a fantastic collection of public art.

Sactown Magazine, which featured the Sundial Bridge in an article a few years ago, is also looking at ways to help Sacramento better appreciate our bridges and beautiful waterfront. Obviously, I'm in.
