My Childhood Library + A Book Sale

The Arden-Dimick Library here in Sacramento is the place of many childhood memories for me. I distinctly remember writing a report on leopards in the 4th grade and having my mom drive me to the library to tackle the very important research involved in writing said report.

I also remember going to the library only to find that it was often closed due to budget constraints and cutbacks. Yes, even back when print reigned supreme, libraries struggled.

They still struggle. That is why when my mom retired, she decided to volunteer some of her time to the Arden-Dimick branch of Friends of the Sacramento Public Library. This coming weekend, the branch is hosting their popular fall book sale where you can buy gently loved books for next to nothing. There will be over 7,000 books available (including a ton of children's books), all priced between $0.50 and $1.50. Not only that, but all of the proceeds are invested right back into the Arden-Dimick Library.

Now, I've said it before and I'll say it again: there is just something special about the printed word. We spend so much time staring at screens these days and books -- real-crease-the-spine-dog-ear-the-pages-if-you-want books -- are such an incredible retreat from all of that.

So if you're in the Sacramento area and happen to be in need of a good book, are looking to get a jump on holiday shopping or simply enjoy being around other book lovers, head to the book sale this weekend. You'll be glad you did.

Note: The books photographed for this post are not representative of those available for sale. The books are mine (many from my college days) and I love them too much to let them go just yet. ;)
